Matias Segura Elementary School — a bold new monument to personal legacy, built proudly on the ashes of a 135-year-old community institution.

Why preserve a historic East Austin school with generations of alumni, deep neighborhood roots, and more than a century of history when you could instead close it and rename the replacement after the very superintendent who pushed the closure through? That’s what vision looks like.
